High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)

High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)

Description

High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is a condition in which the pressure inside the blood vessels remains persistently elevated. It often causes no obvious symptoms, so regular blood pressure checking is important. Untreated hypertension can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease and other complications.

What is High Blood Pressure?

Blood pressure is recorded using two numbers:

Systolic BP – pressure when the heart contracts.
Diastolic BP – pressure when the heart relaxes between beats.

WHO defines hypertension in adults as blood pressure ≥140/90 mmHg when confirmed on two different days.

Common Symptoms

Hypertension is often called a silent condition because many people have no symptoms. When symptoms occur, they may include:

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Vision changes
  • Nosebleeds
  • Palpitations or irregular heartbeat
  • Fatigue
  • Anxiety or restlessness

    Causes & Risk Factors

  • High blood pressure can be associated with:
  • Increasing age
  • Family history/genetics
  • Excess body weight
  • High-salt diet
  • Low intake of fruits and vegetables
  • Physical inactivity
  • Tobacco use
  • Excess alcohol intake
  • Chronic stress
  • Diabetes
  • Kidney or hormonal disorders
  • Types of Hypertension

  • Primary / Essential Hypertension:
Most common form; usually no single identifiable cause.
  • Secondary Hypertension:
Can occur because of another medical problem, such as kidney disease, hormonal disorders, sleep disorders or vascular conditions.

    Why Blood Pressure Control Matters

  • Uncontrolled hypertension can increase the risk of:
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Heart failure
  • Kidney damage
  • Blood-vessel damage
  • Other cardiovascular complications
  • India’s hypertension burden is substantial: WHO’s 2025 country profile estimates about 210.2 million adults aged 30–79 years in India have hypertension, and control remains low.
